Stéphane Raillard

Stéphane Raillard - Manager of the “Frontier Exploration” R&D program

A graduate of the Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI) with a PhD in marine geology, Stéphane joined Elf Aquitaine in 1990 to work as a wellsite geologist in the Exploration Division.

He has been working since 1991 in various Total affiliates overseas. In Angola, he was part of the Exploration team on block 17 that made the first discoveries (Girassol), and was in charge of studying stratigraphy to determine the reservoir potential in that deep offshore area.

Back at headquarters in 1994, he worked as a structural geologist, specialized in salt tectonics (Western Africa, Americas, etc.) and then became exploration advisor in the Nigeria Client Geographical Group.

He went on to work for the Congo affiliate as deep-offshore exploration manager, completing two wells on the MTPS permit. He was then appointed head of the structural geology department from 2002 to 2005.

In 2006, he joined the R&D research group on deeply-buried reservoirs (DBR), which he then headed from 2008 to 2010.

In 2010, he was seconded to the American company, Cobalt Intl, in Houston (USA), where he focused on evaluating deep-offshore prospects, and more particularly on the role of fluid pressures on the entire petroleum system (caprock integrity, prediction before drilling, reservoir quality, etc.).

When he returned to headquarters in 2014, he took part in reorganizing Exploration & Production’s R&D and took on the leadership of the Frontier Exploration research program dedicated to petroleum geology within the Strategy, Growth and Research Division.
