Traditionally, community development in host countries consists of building infrastructure, such as roads, bridges and hospitals, and offering employment to the local population—whether through outsourcing of project activities or direct recruitment for specific positions. But TotalEnergies believes that a more lasting contribution lies in developing skills and knowledge among the local people. This brings lasting benefits to the individual, the community and the entire country.
The Egina project is the largest oil and gas development project in Nigeria, adding 200,000 extra barrels per day to Nigeria’s oil production (approximately 10 percent of the country’s total production), as well as associated gas for the domestic market.
Egina is the third deepwater project developed by Total in Nigeria, after the successful delivery of Akpo in 2009 and Usan in 2012. Both these earlier projects brought progressive benefit to Nigerians with employment and capacity development.
Egina carries on in that tradition, with the highest level of local content and capacity development among all such projects in Nigeria.
Our objective is not to seek just the natural resources of a country, but always to give back—hiring local companies and people (“local content”) and building their skill base through the development of human capacities.
When the Nigerian Oil & Gas Content Development Act was implemented in spring 2010, the geophysicists of Total Upstream Nigeria Ltd. (TUPNI) were intensely studying Egina’s highly faulted reservoirs, beginning to plan the third deepwater oil and gas project in Nigeria.
Always deeply committed to local content and the development of human capacity, TotalEnergies quickly incorporated the provisions of the act into its planning.
Eight years later, more than 240 Nigerians (graduates and school leavers) have been enrolled in 27 major training programs.
Today they can compete, on equal footing, for important jobs in the international oil and gas industry.
